Our
goal is to help writers tell their stories. Statistically, however, most
of the manuscripts people write never get published. Out of the estimated
two million book-length manuscripts circulating each year to publishers,
only 100,000, or 5%, will be published. Of these 5%, only 30% sell enough
copies to make money. Therefore, less than 2% of the manuscripts sent
to publishers yearly will actually be published and make a profit.
At
DeForest Press, we'll help you beat the odds by first looking at your
market and audience objectively, since we are not interested in wasting
a writer's time and money by printing thousands of copies of a poor book,
only to have them sitting in the author's basement or garage. We'll listen
to you and use our expertise to help you produce a professional, marketable,
affordable book in quantities suited to your specific audience.
Where
to begin?
While many authors write their book first and then think about the audience-the
people who will buy their book-your book will have a much better chance
of selling and making money if you begin with the audience in mind before
you begin writing. Doing this allows you to tailor your book to the wants,
needs and desires of your audience and therefore guarantee your own success.
Answering
the following questions will help you position your book to reach the
right market.
Audience
Who will buy your book? What kind of person would put your book on his
or her Christmas list? This is your audience. What is their age? Interests?
Hobbies? Clubs they belong to? Other books they read? Websites they visit?
Competition
What books already at the bookstore or library are most similar to your
book? Why would people buy your book?
Timeline
Do you need your book done by a specific date? Is there an event or anniversary
that could help launch the sale of your book? (For example, the 60th Anniversary
of D-Day for a World War 2 book.) Books that are well written and ready
to go can be printed in as little as 4-6 weeks.
Promotion
What opportunities do you have to promote your book in your community
and beyond? What upcoming events, anniversaries or occasions do you have
to sell your book? What local bookstores may be interested in selling
your book?
Web
Site
Do you have a web site where you can promote or sell your book? We'll
work with you to determine how best to promote and sell your book on the
DeForest Press web site. Or if you prefer, you can use your own site to
create interest in your writing and offer presales of your book to get
cash-in-hand even before printing.
